The Learning in Community requirement will be waived for transfer students with at least 30 credits taken post-high school and for UMD students who started in a UMD program where this was not required. First-year students who have completed 30 PSEO credits may request a waiver to the student's primary college.

This is the first required course in the German Studies B.A. Students with prior language study or near-native fluency should consult with the department about completing a departmental exam to earn credit for GER 1202 or substituting a different course from the Program Electives to earn these four credits.

Fulfillment of the Language Core is a prerequisite for all German Studies Electives. Study abroad is strongly encouraged. With German Studies faculty consent, some upper-division German Studies courses may be transferred and/or taken abroad. At least three GER courses (12 credits) must be taken from UMD faculty. At least 20 credits must be taught in German.
To enroll in these courses, a student must have earned a grade of C or better in GER 1202 or have instructor's permission.
A maximum of 8 combined credits may be taken from GER 3591 and 4591.

The German Studies Program requires an examination of language proficiency. Contact the department or your advisor for more information.
Students with prior language study may be exempt from some language courses and should consult the department about placement.
