University Policy

All students must meet the requirements stated in the Undergraduate Degrees, Minors, and Credit-Bearing Certificates Policy and the Credit Requirements Policy, including the following:

UMD residency credit requirements for undergraduate degrees include a minimum of 30 semester credits; 15 credits of the last 30 credits; and half of upper-division (3xxx-level or higher) credits that satisfy major requirements.
Undergraduate degree program requirements also include completion of the Liberal Education Program and no more than 20 S/N semester credits.
The University of Minnesota (UMN) GPA required for graduation is a minimum of 2.00, which is cumulative and includes only University of Minnesota coursework from all campuses. Each UMD major, minor, and certificate requires a minimum program GPA of 2.00, which includes transfer coursework meeting requirements for the academic program.
If pursuing multiple programs that include overlapping coursework, students must complete a minimum number of non-overlapping credits for each additional program.

Program Requirements

This major does not require a second field of study (e.g., minor, major, degree).
Students are expected to make satisfactory academic progress each semester, including grades of at least C- or better in all courses required in the major.
Demonstrate acceptable performance, including dispositions and skills, in all aspects of class and production work. Progress towards and attainment of proficiency is assessed by department faculty throughout the sequenced courses and productions, through Juries conducted in the spring semester for Design and Production students, and through season audition work for Acting and Musical Theatre students.
Seek out advising each term with their academic advisor throughout their college career, to ensure they are on track for program completion.
Acting and Musical Theatre students are required to participate in all main stage season auditions and to accept roles as cast in main stage season productions.
Design and Production students are required to participate in the main stage season and to accept design assignments as agreed upon through the production assignment process.
Students who do not make satisfactory progress (as defined in the department policy stated in the Theatre Student Handbook and encompassing academic performance, artistic growth and behavioral integrity) and/or do not remain in good standing with all university policies, may jeopardize their status in the B.F.A. program and be subject to review and/or removal from this degree program.
Adhere to university policies regarding attendance; in addition to the above expectations, students must abide by all university policies. Failure to abide will result in consequences potentially up to and including removal from the degree program and the university.
In addition to the program requirements listed below, students are required to complete a sub-plan.

Global experience is a UMD goal for all students, so international study is encouraged. Talk with an academic or faculty advisor to explore academic options for fulfilling your degree requirements through study abroad.
