5L1 - Teaching English as a Foreign Language Certificate
Program description
This certificate is designed for any degree-seeking students or community members interested in teaching English domestically or abroad. Coursework covers theory and methodology of teaching English as an additional language to K-12 and adult learners. Students analyze the latest research in language learning, create their own teaching materials and learn to teach speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Language policy in education is explored while learning about different models of bilingual and immersion education. The relationship between language, culture, and identity and how it affects classroom dynamics is examined throughout all courses. Abundant practical teaching and learning opportunities are provided to prepare students for real-life classrooms with multilinguals. Students have the chance to observe experienced TEFL teachers in the classroom and complete field experience hours. An undergraduate degree and Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) Certificate are often considered minimum requirements to obtain paid English teaching positions abroad.
