Program description

For those passionate about making a difference in the lives of students with diverse learning needs, the Special Education minor offers an immersive, hands-on exploration of the special education field. Whether students are pursuing a career in education or in another field, this minor equips students with foundational knowledge in special education theory, practices, and legal frameworks. From understanding the characteristics of various disabilities to learning how to advocate for inclusive classrooms, students in this program dive deep into one of education’s most impactful areas.

Through dynamic and inclusive coursework, students will explore the history and evolution of special education, as well as contemporary strategies for fostering inclusion and equity in the classroom. Students also gain insight into real-world challenges and solutions through interactive case studies. While the minor does not lead directly to licensure, it provides a strong foundation that can be applied toward further qualifications and licensure requirements in K-12 Special Education.

Open to students from all majors, admission to the Special Education minor requires completion of 60 credit hours with a minimum 2.7 GPA. Whether students are looking to enhance their teaching skills or broaden their understanding of student needs, this minor opens the door to numerous career paths in education and beyond.

To graduate with two or more academic programs, programs must have a specific number of non-overlapping credits in accordance with the Credit Requirement Policy.

Courses for the Special Education minor apply toward but do not complete K-12 special education licensure requirements. Remaining courses can be taken on a postbaccalaureate contract. Students majoring in Integrated Elementary and Special Education cannot also declare this minor.
