Description of other application requirements
Applications are accepted on a rolling basis, with a priority deadline each year in early January. Students are primarily admitted only for fall semester, but spring admission is an option in special circumstances.
The General GRE is not required, but is encouraged for international applicants and optional for domestic (US) applicants. There is no minimum score required for international applicants.
International and domestic applicants whose first language is not English must provide proof of English language proficiency. Please visit the English Proficiency Requirements page for more information: z.umn.edu/proficiency-reqs .
A new scoring scale has been introduced for the TOEFL exam. Minimum required scores on exams taken on or after January 21, 2026 are as follows:
Overall: 4.5
Reading: 4.5
Writing: 4.5
The exam date should be within two years of the program start date.
