Course description
This course presents a conceptual and practical framework for considering the past, present, and future of Indigenous governments in North America. With emphases on both inherent Tribal sovereignty and US federal Indian policy, we will examine key contours and contexts of Indigenous self-governance including the relationships between Tribal governments, the US federal government, and state and local governments. Students will develop a critical understanding of Tribal sovereignty as a legal principle as well as the practical realities faced by American Indian nations today.
